OH MY GODDESS

The Goddesses emerged at the end of Summer 2024. I was thinking about the changing season and making ceramic pears in response to a tree in my garden, laden with the golden fruit. Joined by gourds, artichokes, pomegranates and figs, all bursting with life and plump with fertility…. of course Goddesses began to appear. The first looked like an ancient relic, but they quickly started to take on forms with meaning for me, the sea {my own Goddess}, nature, nourishment, joyfulness, creativity etc … mostly they seemed to arrive at my fingertips, practically making themselves, in an exultant rush.
When I was a child, I had the same dream every night. I dreamt that I could fly. I would stand on the top landing, leap off and fly straight down the stairs and out through the open front door, to a freedom and an unknown world beyond. When I woke up I was always so disappointed.
Later in life on the brink of an actual leap of faith, I made a sculpture in casting wax. A naked female figure, teetering on the edge of a rock. Her arms were outstretched behind her and a bird mask was covering her face. She was meant to be made in bronze, but the casting failed and she was ruined.
This masked female figure is reborn with the Goddesses. She makes friends with the birds, she is happy, strong and free. She prefers anonymity, wanting to be seen for what she does, not what she looks like. She looks inward in order to transform, she is rich with creativity, knowledge and self awareness.
She represents the Goddess in all women who have ever needed to fly, to follow a lifelong desire, to escape a bad situation, or to finally become their true self with joy and acceptance.
“You can do it” she calls, “put on your mask and fly”
